Please don't

Rush to put in sources for citations like the van der Waals equation. Citations that go in:

  • (1) should be solid, reputable, even esteemed secondary sources—graduate and better undergraduate physical chemistry text books like PW Atkins, journal review articles, and monograph review chapters, etc.
  • (2) The citations should be entered fully and completely, so another does not have to come in after you, to add missing citation elements.
  • (3) Critically, when sourcing an article post hoc, the content needs to be checked against the source, very carefully. (As a Prof, I rarely find that the content can remain precisely the same, when adding a source that is not the actual source from which the material was originally drawn.)

This is all wikipedia policy, available by going to the standard science citation, see WP:SCICITE, but it is also good research practice, and standard academic training to write about science.

Note, the quickly found web coverage that you added—like Khan academy, or even self-published professor or student course information webpages—are not good or even acceptable science sources. (The Nobel page is fine, but it needs to be a complete citation, and, per point (3), it needs to be the source of the very quote appearing. (In your haste to add sources, and make the article appear to be without need of tagging, did you locate the quote at the page you cited?)

Bottom line, take your time, and do it right. Anyone can do a slap up, quick, freshman college effort. A good effort takes time, care, thought. If I have worked on an article, there is often a new "Further reading" section with possible good sources added (see here, Physical_organic_chemistry#Further_reading). Otherwise, you can always go to the ACS Journals site, see here [2], or with Google books, see here [3].

Actually, since most readers of wikipedia are undergraduates, high school students or amateurs linking to online educational sources makes a lot of sense for this subject. Here is an example of what must change when unsourced text is reviewed against sources

M. Alex, here is an example of edits to the "Validity" section at the van der Waals equation article, prompted by my wishing to complete an incomplete citation.

I found the Terrell Hill source that was cited, identified a modern reprint, and read the corresponding pages (p. 280 -> pp. 286-289). I completed the reference, so that the information cited can now be found at an online at a book site with a "Look inside" feature.

However, in reviewing the material, I also found that the original writer:

  • did not draw all information from this source (so some [citation needed] tags have to remain), and
  • did not accurately convey the cited authors views.

Specifically, Hill makes clear statements as the the value of the equation, and this material was added to the paragraph, and cited. At the same time, the text's information that was more critical was retained, in part in quote form, the rest in close paraphrase. To finish the session, I also sourced another statement, that the theory was of use pedagogically, and added three text book examples.

This is the sort of work that needs to be done in this article, in my opinion. My tagging is not drive-by; the problems of this article are exhaustive—it needs being gone over sentence by unsourced sentence—and simply adding self-published sources at various points will not make it a good article.   • I have only make a brief look on your edits, but they look constructive, continue your good work. If possible concentrate not on pasting scary templates but on actual improvement of the article. Since va nDer Waals equation is a subject of a typical freshman physics or even high school physics course many things can be considered public knowledge. It is important to identify and remove things that actually incorrect and reference those that are unusual and not public knowledge. If we put a lot of citation tags on public knowledge facts we can loose our focus. I have blocked you for numerous addition of false information. E.g. By this edit you stated that Saaed Orokzai won Golden_Eagle_Award as Best Director for Shout In The Mist. It is incorrect. The 2002 award went to Aleksandr Rogozhkin for The Cuckoo check [5]. Saaed Orokzai never won this award. It is not the first time you introduce false information about this actor. Protection Level for Kievan Rus' Article

Hello, you recently added a protection level to the article Kievan Rus' with the reason "persistent addition of unsourced or poorly sourced content". However, the only recent additions were an image from Commons at the following address: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Alex_K_Kievan_Rus..svg

As you can see in the link, the image that was added as well as its description are clearly referenced by simply clicking on the image itself. Therefore, your reason given for adding a protection level, "persistent addition of unsourced or poorly sourced content", is clearly incorrect as all content added was clearly referenced. This image is the appropriate image for the article Kievan Rus'.

In addition, you also made some changes which re-order Russia to appear before Ukraine in multiple places in the article. This would be strange to users, as Kiev is in Ukraine and not Russia. Although Muscovy subsequently renamed itself to Russia in the 18th century in order to adopt the history of Kievan Rus', and Ukraine later renamed itself from Ruthenia to Ukraine, Russia should not appear before Ukraine simply because the current name of Muscovy is similar to Rus', especially given the circumstances of the name change. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 93.74.143.63 (talk) 17:42, 20 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

  • Yep, as the description on commons clearly state, the image is the own work of "Alex Tora or Alex K in Ukranian and Japanese wiki" based on some website link from Kiev Politechny Institute. The website states that tridents were often found on Kiev Rus coins, buildings, pottery etc. It does not say that the trident was the official coat of arms of Kiev Rus (Western concept of the coat of arms seems to be foreign in medieval Eastern Europe), nor about the colours (Blue-Yellow Ukrainian colours were adopted in the early 18th century), nor of the specific design.   • Well, nothing is deleted, all changes to the articles are saved to its history and they are almost never removed from there. It only needs a few second to restore any additions if a consensus formed that some changes improve the article. Please argue your case on the talk pages of the articles, not by making personal attacks on contributors. I'm planning of doing an investigation into edits (and editors) from the country Ghana. I want to find out if AlexNewArtBot can generate a list of registered users that have made edits to a Wikipedia articles' category from a particular Geo-location within a time range? E.g.   • I do not think this is correct use of the tool. AlexNewArtBot is intended to help in patrolling new articles, that often do not have correct categories, links, etc. Because it is trying to classify articles based on their content, not categories it gives significant number of false negative and false positive. I think for established articles a tool based categories, e.g. the content of all categories that are progeny of Category:Ghana should be much more accurate.   • I put credibility to people like Zdeněk Bažant who did post-mortem analysis of the collapsed towers. I do not trust self-published publications of a "scientific conference" chaired by Anthropology Professors. Because of the great public interest in September 11 attack I am quite sure that if anything worth noting would have come down from this "conference" it will be all over respectable newspapers and peer-reviewed scientific publications.   • Hi, DDupard. The bot is used only for patrolling new articles. It scans them once and in a few days it will remove all the links to the article from its pages. BTW, patrolling of new articles nowadays is done by InceptionBot written by User:Bamyers99. It supersedes my AlexNewArtBot but still using my old infrastructure and some ideas. The new bot works much more reliably than mine (that was my first experiment with Perl programming). I may be unaware of some small details of the new bot's implementation.   • To be honest, I do not see much use of editing a talk page of a permabanned user with no write access to his own page rather than attract some sort of grave dance. As a way to communicate with him/her the talk page is not the best way as they probably would not read it anyway. On the other hand, during his short period of activity ADI has managed to make quite a number of enemies, and I would be very reluctant to block people just for "Say you so" and similar replies. You are right, template editors were an error on my part, I am not sure it is worth to fix (and enlarge the block log), I do not expect many template editors rushing to edit ADI's talkpage.     • Yeah that's a good point. I meant more, a warning like "don't do that" rather than blocking straight away. I still reckon it's worth fixing the TE protection though, there are some who feel pretty strongly (not I) about it only being used for templates and modules as it says in prot policy. Hi Alex, I'm sorry to bother you on this matter. One month ago you thanked for my updates on Robert Conquest and The Harvest of Sorrow. Since then I made more larger updates arriving to this final revision [6], meanwhile a NPOV dispute as been put through, with the main purpose to delete most of my edits (which were all backed by reliable sources) with different excuses. Now these sections [7][8][9][10] has been completely deleted, while others have been deleted in part, with the final excuse of "no consensus", along with accusations of NPOV, unsourced edits (which was never the case), tendentious editing (even after rewriting them in a more neutral tone), copyvio, that were finally revealed to not apply. I saw you did a lot of work to the articles. I have not yet reviewed them all, most of it looks seems to be a greast improvement, some appeared to me as biased against Conquest, but that was the first impression that might be incorrect. I have a lot of respect to Conquest's works for their criticism of Stalinism and Leninism, but unfortunately I am not an expert in his biography. According to WP:RUS if there is an established English name (e.g the guy published in English under a consistent name or lived in an English-speaking country under the same name, etc.) then this name should be used, otherwise Likhachyov. I have moved Vasily Likhachev I have patrolled recently to the yoficated name, lets hope he does not have an established English name. I think e/yo issue is not that important if we have redirects for the other versions of the name.
