Merge article?

Surely this page can be merged with chigoe flea? --Gak 12:46, 6 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

These are distinct topics. The chigoe flea article discusses the insect Tunga penetrans, while this page discusses the human infectious disease that it may cause. Rytyho usa (talk) 16:42, 11 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Urban Legends?

I was down at a family reunion in Missouri, and we were all warned about "chiggers", which seems to be the focus of this article. These animals were talked about by multiple people, who I wouldn't call the best of liars... —Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.164.246.211 (talk) 18:09, 14 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
--Ah, I see, somewhere down the line the stories about actual chiggers (harvest mites, which actually do live in the states) where fused with the more... well, horrifying characteristics of the similarly-named Chigoe.

No, the focus of this article is not chiggers, even though tunga penetrans is called chigger sometime. Unlike the chigoe flea, chiggers are not six-legged insects but eight-legged mites.

Incubation Period

This section is not needed for the simple fact that incubation period is used only medically to indicate the time it takes to develop symptoms after exposure to an infective agent such as bacteria, virus, protist, or prion. As tungiasis is technically an infestation, not an infection, the term incubation period does not apply.

Transmission

Transmission of tungiasis is strictly by infection of Tunga penetrans. Tungiasis is technically an infestation, not infection. Infestation is the pathological condition where a parasite invades a body. The term infection is reserved for conditions caused by microorganisms such as virus, bacteria, protist, or the infectious agent ption.
