Bad Latin

This should be called "Tinea incognita", not "Tinea incognito"! According to the Spanish Wikipedia article, it's called "Tiña incógnita" in Spanish. Is there any explanation for the bad Latin in the original paper? Eric Kvaalen (talk) 06:35, 26 May 2018 (UTC)

Who says it's supposed to be Latin, and not English? Per wikt:incognito:

Etymology: Borrowed from Italian incognito, from Latin incognitus (“unknown”), from in- (“not”) + cognitus (“known”), perfect passive participle of cognoscere.

Meaning: without being known; in disguise; in an assumed character, or under an assumed title.

Whereas wikt:incognita:

1. A woman who is unknown or in disguise.
2. (of a woman) The state of being in disguise.

Nothing in the article says that it's a woman's disease.

My Google ngram search comes up empty for "incognita".

DermNet NZ seems almost a one-off claiming that this is a "misspelling". Maybe that's the correct spelling in "New Zealand English"?

Actually per wikt:incognitus#Latin:

* incognitus is the masculine form

* incognita is the feminine form

@Wbm1058: A disease name like this is supposed to be Latin. I say it should be "Tinea incognita" because "tinea" is feminine so the adjective should also be in the feminine form. (By the way, "incognitō" in Latin can be masculine or neuter, but only dative or ablative case.) When you say that CermNet NZ claims that this is a misspelling, what do they say is a misspelling? Eric, Tinea incognita. I hear what you're saying. I've never studied Latin, so can only assume that you are correct with regard to the forms.

I found that link via a Google search.

On the other hand the American Osteopathic College of Dermatology (AOCD) is using Tinea incognito.

At some point the sheer number of sources (WP:COMMON NAME) using "incorrect Latin" probably makes this spelling "correct English". You could request a move at WP:RM. That might start an interesting discussion. wbm1058 (talk) 16:42, 30 April 2019 (UTC)
