Hi Bkroeger! I'm really happy that there's someone else interested in language acquisition here on Wikipedia! Have you considered joining the Applied Linguistics Task Force? It's just me at the moment, but I'm sure that some more people will join after it becomes better known. About this article - would you consider merging this material to language acquisition or language development? Speech acquisition seems to be very closely tied in to these concepts, and the articles could both do with improvement. Merging this material might be just the thing for them. Proposed merge

Speech acquisition is currently a short page, and its content is closely related to Language acquisition. Both the current lead section and the linked reference call the field "early language acquisition". See also the comment above from Mr. Stradivarius.

• Comment - Warning: I'm very new on Wikipedia! So I apologize if my contribution to this discussion isn't formatted right. I'd argue against combining these two articles. Language is not the same as speech. Speech is in an important sense a more narrow topic, being as it is only one way that language is instantiated. Cecilemckee (talk) 01:28, 15 January 2012 (UTC)

  Hello Dr. McKee, and thanks for commenting here. I changed the formatting to the usual discussion format, but don't worry too much about that; it's the content that's the important thing. I had a brief look at sources I could find on the web, and it seems obvious that the concept of speech acquisition passes our notability guidelines. Because of this, the question of whether speech acquisition can have its own article is largely down to how we want to structure the topic area. I'm not trying to claim that language acquisition and speech acquisition are different concepts the same concept; rather, judging from the article, it looks as if speech acquisition is a subset of language acquisition. My recommendation to merge was based on the fact that any decent article on language acquisition would include information on the acquisition of language phonology etc., and that at the moment this information is very patchy. However, now that I have found out from your course page that you are letting a whole class-full of students loose on it, I am tempted to leave the decision as a kind of homework assignment for them. If we plan on working on the article seriously, there are a few big decisions we will have to make about its structure and how it relates to the surrounding articles. • Speech acquisition is completely seperate from language acquisition. The problem is made worse by much of the content of the Linguistics project articles which seem to be some 10 years behind the current understanding of even language acquisition. All of my family have a clinical diagnosis of Auditory Processing Disorder which causes a delay in speech acquisition. All this nonsense about being hardwired for language acquisition, makes gaining any aware of our communication disability more difficult. And there are many issues which can cause problems with speech acquisition which are not related to language acquisition. So the articles should remain seperate, and the speech acquisition article should reflect international speech pathology. dolfrog (talk) 05:14, 30 July 2012 (UTC)
