It was first called Schindler disease in 1988, after Detlev Schindler, M.D., the first author in "Schindler, D.; Bishop, D. F.; Wallace, S.; Wolfe, D. E.; Desnick, R. J. :Characterization of alpha-N-acetylgalactosaminidase deficiency: a new neurodegenerative lysosomal disease. Pediat. Res. 23: 333A only, 1988", one of the early articles which described it.
