Fact Check

There are a few facts in this article that are not quite correct. I have seen these these same errors in other writings and hate to see them repeated here.

1) The definition of a “hole” is half correct. A hole was a valley but it also had a meaning similar to a “fishing hole.” A hole was somewhere where game was plentiful and was a good area to camp and maybe trap in.

2) There is seems to be some confusion about the forks of the Teton. The forks of the Teton River are down in the flood plain of the Henry’s Fork of the Snake River near Rexburg and Sugar City. At one time, Bitch Creek was also called the North Fork but now its official name is Bitch Creek.

3) Teton Basin and Pierre’s Hole are two names for the same place. Many are now calling it Teton Valley. There is an actual basin that would form a lake but for the Teton River having eroded a canyon to drain it.

4) The photo you have is taken from Garrit meadows in Island Park just north of Mesa Falls. It is not Teton Basin. I have a similar photo taken from the same place.

5) Richard Leigh (Beaver Dick) did not live in Teton Basin. He trapped and hunted it in the summer but lived on the lower Teton in the Henry’s Fork flood plain. In the 1870’s when he wrote his journals, he had a squater’s cabin on the South Fork of the Teton west of Rexburg but he only lived there a few season and mostly during the winters. In the 1890’s, he actually owned land and lived near the Teton River a few miles east of Wilford. My great grand parents were close friends.

I have references for all of this. I hope we can correct it. (above submitted 06:03, 28 August 2009 by 69.235.214.228)

all good faith edits are welcome. Please familiarize yourself with the basic mechanisms and policies at Wikipedia and then make appropriate changes. Sources for significant corrections should be cited. There are many source citing formats used here, but you can begin by using a standard footnote method as used in high school and college papers. Please look over your concerns -- and read the entire article -- before making any corrections. For example, Pierre's Hole is the subject/title of the article, but Teton Basin and Teton Valley are mentioned in regard to later settlement. And the photo shows the Teton Range, rather than specifically Pierre's Hole. Best Wishes. WBardwin (talk) 02:10, 29 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
