Was Mary of Teck styled Duchess Mary in Saxony and Princess Mary of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha or Duchess George in Saxony and Princess George of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha? I know that she was The Princess George of the United Kingdom, but I am not sure about her German titles (especially the ducal one). Surtsicna (talk) 22:55, 5 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

That is an interesting question. I suppose that Saxe-Coburg & Gotha respected her status as the wife of a Prince of SCG (which her husband was as a male line grandson of Prince Albert of SCG, husband of Queen Victoria)out of politeness to the British crown, however in Germany there were strickt rules about morganatic marriages and technically, as a mere Princess of Teck, Mary wasn't of equal status to her husband as far as the German rules were concerned. As a Princess of SCG however she would automatically be a Duchess in (or of) (the Kingdom of) Saksony with the style of Royal Highness. Furthermore I don't think the Germans followed the British custom of using the first name of the husband for Princesses that derive their status from their husbands and are not Princesses in their own right. So in ScG she would be "Princess Mary". Gerard von Hebel (talk) 17:15, 19 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Princess of Teck

Why would Mary of lost her title of "Princess of Teck" upon her marriage? Can understand if her British titles outranked the Teck title, but I don't understand the loss.

Thanks in advance for the help.
