Now at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject LGBT studies/Archive 72#Sourcing problems at List of gay villages
Hey, @RoySmith, sorry to ping you to such an old post. I ended up here via a related issue and it looks to me like while there've been a lot of citations added, many of them are pretty iffy. Bloggy sources, sources that don't use the term gay village or gayborhood, sources that are no more than directory listings of a few gay/gay-friendly bars in the area. A lot of it feels OR/SYNTHY; even if it's an RS is calling the neighborhood 'gay-friendly', does that mean it's a 'gay village'? Valereee (talk) 13:55, 5 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hmmm, I'd long since forgotten about that, but thanks for the ping. RoySmith (talk) 15:08, 5 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

So is Kings Heath (motto: It's not Queen's Heath) still a gay village, now that Joe Lycett and his alter ego Ken Roberts has part of his standup act being "How I invented Kings Heath as a gay village and planted the story in Birmingham Live" ?

Also, where's Hebden Bridge and Solva ? Andy Dingley (talk) 20:47, 1 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

yes I'd say so. the local businesses support it and the pride parade recently went ahead for it's 3rd year. So I'd say that this no longer just lycett saying it. It is now 2A00:23EE:1CA0:5916:2C67:9A:5CDA:1659 (talk) 17:28, 3 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Cathedral City and Coachella Valley (let's add more sources)

In the early 2020s, rising real estate costs in the SF Bay Area (less in San Francisco moving into Oakland and inland valleys like Sacramento, Fresno and Bakesfield), living standards issues in CA cities (along the coast like Santa Barbara, Santa Cruz, Santa Monica and Long Beach), and the recent events in FL state politics has made large numbers of LGBTQ residents relocate into the Palm Springs area, one of the world's largest concentrations of queer residents (half to 2/3rds of Palm Springs and neighboring Cathedral City, California, Las Palmas is a Lesbian neighborhood or the nickname "Les Bi (Tr)Ans" close to the Dinah Shore weekend for Lesbians and various queer identities, while the annual White Party originated in Demuth Park is usually reserved for Gay men, sections 28 (double the 14) and "Latitude" 33 (Rancho Mirage) comparable to section 14 (where East Arenas Road or "the Towers" are) and increasingly in El Paseo in Palm Desert and Old Town La Quinta, even Desert Hot Springs, Indian Wells, Indio and Coachella known for the music and arts festivals, a LGBTQ community center abd lower cost housing where apartments or duplexes are abundant, but not limited to that type of housing). There has been similar growth of LGBTQ+ populations in Utah (Salt Lake City), Texas like Sixth Street (Austin, Texas), and Oklahoma (its namesake city and Tulsa), the half a century or more of increasing visibility and some cases, integration of LGBTQ with the cis-hetero majorities, but the problem of loss of bars, clubs and spaces (being involuntarily taken over by cis-hetero persons) needs to be addressed in the article (Northern European countries where "Homophiles" in the Norwegian language remains in usage there, despite "Homosexual" is an abandoned term in favor for Gay as in L*G*BT and Queer). And to read about the "stealthy" then visible and now accepted presence of Gay villages for LGBTQ people, note L comes first to honor Lesbian nurses taken care of Gay patients in the primetime of the HIV/AIDS epidemic in the 1980s, the community has strong support with feminism and many cis hetero women allies. 2603:8001:2601:F351:E9C7:1862:8D49:AAC4 (talk) 02:54, 28 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The East Village in Des Moines, Iowa is Not a Gay Village

While there are three small gay bars in the East Village of Des Moines, Iowa, that does not mean it is a "Gay Village." In fact, the citation used for its addition on the list does not even label it as a "Gay Village" or "Gayborhood" and uses pictures of buildings that have since been demolished. Just because a neighborhood hosts a Pride does not mean it's a "Gay Village." Downtown Waterloo, Iowa hosts a Pride too, but it's definitely not a "gay getaway" as described in the article. Unlike a real Gay Village like The Castro in San Francisco, there is no gay restaurants or gay cafes in the East Village. Unlike a real Gay Village like Boystown in Chicago, there are no gay lodgings or gay museums in the East Village. The user that added it to the list claims the East Village is a Gay Village because LGBTQ+ individuals work at Alleged Lee's and Up Down, both which are not gay establishments. The user that added it to the list also claims Black Magic Tattoo and AllSpice are queer owned, meanwhile there is absolutely no citation for this claim. Black Magic Tattoo and AllSpice also do not host any queer events. For all of these reasons and more, the East Village should be removed from this list of Gay Villages. I agree that the cited sources are insufficient to label this as a gay neighbourhood. Meters (talk) 04:14, 7 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you. Two different Anon users keep adding it back to the list and deleting my discussion from the Talk page. What do I do? Harryhay69 (talk) 04:22, 7 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Answered in your Teahouse thread. Meters (talk) 04:31, 7 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
