Untitled

Cleaned it up a bit and added Mike Quill as a former famous resident. My great-grandparents are from the village, and Mike Quill stayed with them when he first came to the US.

Somebody is removing the fact that Jackie Healy Rae is from Kilgarvan, this is the second time it has happened and I will be forced to take action if it happens again. 26/Feb/2007

I have once again reverted an edit that had removed Jackie Healy Rae from the item. This one was by 87.41.9.65 . Can any sysop block this user as it has happened before, without any valid reason. The information is correct and Jackie Healy Rae is noteworthy enough to be included.--Dmol 16:37, 14 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Politics

"Although Kilgarvan is centrally located between Kenmare and Killarney it suffers from many problems, Kilgarvan has no Broadband access severely hindering business and education. Littering has become an increasing problem as has parking. Kilgarvan does not have a public car park nor does it have public toilets. Street Lighting is inadequate in parts of the village and the existing pavements are poorly maintained. The roadway through the village forms part of the R569 regional road from Kenmare to Poulgorm Bridge. The village road surface is in a third world shape and development traffic and articulated lorries often create traffic jams in the Village. Despite many promises from John O'Donoghue TD the road surface remains dangerous particularly in the centre of the Village by the old Graveyard."

This is pure politics.

RE: Politics

Kilgarvan has alot of major infrastructural problems which I have highlighted. John O'Donoghue made alot of promises to Kilgarvan and have failed in every single one and this deserves highlighting. I don't care if even President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad came in and did something; To say it is pure politics only harks of begrudgery and ignorance. It is fact that Kilgarvan has suffered alot in the last few years and my aim here is to highlight that issue (and the other positives) in this article and I firmly believe in keeping this article in line with common sense and that is exactly how it is structured.

"John O'Donoghue made alot of promises to Kilgarvan and have failed in every single one and this deserves highlighting." This is your political opinion and doesn't belong in an encyclopedic article. Look, I agree with you on many of these points, but this is supposed to be an encyclopedic article and not a political soapbox.

I am totally against soapboxing however I do not want the truth of the article chopped at the expensive of neutrality. However if it can be worded differently to put across a similar message albeit "less politicised". I will try re-write the the paragraph to suit better, I re-iterate I am totally committed to Wikipedia and this article must be kept as close to the wiki guidelines as possible, perhaps a more experienced editor could be drafted in for a few mins to rewrite the paragraph. I will submit my rewritten paragraph here first in the coming days for analogy.--Netwhizkid 18:51, 4 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I have restored the various tags. In the next few days, I'm going to yank a whole bunch of material as unsourced and/or POV. A few notes on my most recent edits:
"The sustainability of these prices are questionable since Kilgarvan has no permanent fixed industry.South East Kerry Settlements Draft Local Area Plan - Kilgarvan" The source supplied supports half of that: "Kilgarvan has no permanent fixed industry." The rest is synthesis or original research.
"As a result of the plant's age, raw sewerage is regularly discharged into the Roughty River." The source cited says no such thing.
"The sewerage situation has thrown some of Kilgarvan's proposed housing developments into doubt until a new plant is built." The source cited does not say that, rather, "According to the Kerry County Council, the lack of sufficient sewage treatment will be 'a constraint on development in the village' until a new plant is completed."
I am not finished with the article, by any means. There is still a lot to review and I'm sure some additional sources will have to come in.

After some recent editing, I've removed the POV and copyedit headers.
There is still some POV scattered about, I've tagged most of it in-line. If it isn't cleaned up in a reasonable time period, I'll yank the material.
Most of the copyedit stuff was of the "I like to Capitalized a few random Nouns every Now and Then for no Real Reason" variety. I've cleared out most of that. There's still a humdinger of a run-on sentance at the end of the history section (starting, "This battle was...").
There is still lot of unsourced stuff floating about. Most of it was added some time ago by an editor who seems to have issues with how Kilgarvan is being run by the powers that be. Much of the material included is a laundry list of things that editor seems to believe Kilgarvan should have that it does not. Seriously: how many major cities do not have public parking lots and toilets? Do their articles mention this fact? Not unless it has become a significant public issue.

I have overhauled the article and provided more references, perhaps you could edit as necessary and remove the tags. It is hard to provide citations for the history as not much was written on it and practically nothing exists on the internet. History

Several problems here:

  • "The warrior McCaura" The source cited does not mention this person and there is no indication why, among the other dead, McCaura was significant.
  • "This battle was tantamount in early Irish History..." There seems to be a wording problem here. "Tantamount" means "equal to". What was this battle equal to in early Irish History? The cited source is a broken link.
  • "...the result strategically weakened Norman influence in Ireland ..." This seems to be another word choice problem. The source cited does not mention any impact on Norman influence after the battle. Based on the current wording, it seems to be saying that the battle was undertaken with the intent of weakening Norman influence. However, the source says nothing whatsoever about the reason for this particular battle.
  • The sources are very weak.
    • [1] is a dead link. Hogan Stand Magazine may or may not be authoritative in their field, but that is a moot point. Their field is the Gaelic Athletic Association, not Irish history.
    • [2] is a website for "a development of holiday homes". We might use such a site for very basic information about the development (if it were otherwise notable), but certainly not for anything else.
    • [3] is a link to a wikipedia article. Wikipedia is not a reliable source. Wikipedia citing itself is a problem.

If this is a significant battle in Irish history, there certainly will be reliable published sources covering it. They may not be online, but that is immaterial. (Actually, any truely significant event will likely have some coverge that is at least indexed through Google Scholar.) - SummerPhD (talk) 17:34, 10 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]


Population over 1,000

"The recent property boom helped to increase Kilgarvan's population to over 1,000Census 2006 - Pg 91, Kenmare Rural Area 057 Kilgarvan, 052 Glanlea, 053 Glanlough." Two problems:

  • The source actually shows a population of 599 in 2002 and 633 in 2006, not "over 1,000".
  • The source does not mention the Irish property bubble or property boom as being involved.
  • Calling a "property bubble" a "property boom" is misleading. Let's just call it what it was.
  • It is unclear, to say the least, how an increase in housing prices would lead to population growth.

Kilgarvan's population is calculated using DED District Electoral Division and for statistical purposes consists of three districts as you can see here and here called Kilgarvan, Glanlough and Glanlee when you add the three together you get the total figure of 1,046.

The increase in house prices led to many more being built on a speculative basis as a result of the bubble these new houses were then rented out and sold and this brought new people into the area and encouraged natives to stay rather move elsewhere. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Dodge1884 (talk • contribs) 01:07, 11 February 2009

The cite that was used directed to pag 91, which gives the population of one Electoral Devision as 599 (in 2002) -> 633 (in 2006). Pages 43 and 141 of that same source give the population of the town as 156 (in 2002) -> 164 (in 2006). Additionally, the Draft Local Area Plan cited elsewhere in the article [4] gives those same figures (156 and 164) plus a 1996 figure of 175, also for the town. This article is about the town name Kilgarvan, not three Electoral Devisions using, in part, that name. Adding three figures together in synthesis. Saying the change reflects a national trend in original research.
Additionally, the three figures show a decrease in population with a partial recovery, which does not mirror the trend cited. Compare the figures I've cited to figures at Irish_population_analysis:

Your second paragraph above is not usable, as it lacks citation to a reliable source.
