There is a lot more to the story of John Willis Menard. This seminar about Menard includes a great talk by by Phillip W. Magness.^[1] He describes:

early career as an abolitionist, including a famous speech in 1859. Menard also wrote a book An Address to Free Colored People of Illinois.
his position as an emigrationist within the abolitionist movement
more about his government career
marriage to a woman he met in Jamaica in 1863 while returning from Honduras, relocation to Jamaica in early 1865
involvement in Jamaican politics and friendship with George William Gordon
arrest pursuant to the Morant Bay rebellion and escape organized by the U.S. Consul.
