I first assumed that the text referred to Peter's first cousin Princess Irene, Duchess of Aosta, a Greek princess married to an Italian prince. It appears, however, that the text does indeed refer to Ovtchinnikova. Surtsicna (talk) 12:45, 22 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
They have used an alternate spelling of the name Irina. White Russians were certainly very passionate about their cause, which they might have thought would be served by an Axis victory. Others could have thought a Allied victory would be to their advantage because it would secure Stalins position and lead to a futher weakening of the Soviet Union through his poor leadership. It is "a riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma" to quote Churchill.
