Largest buffalo herd in the U.S.?

"The mountains are home to a herd of approximately 200 buffalo, the largest free-ranging herd in the U.S."

I don't believe this statement. Unless there is some definition of "free-ranging" that I'm not getting, there are more bison in Yellowstone National Park, as well as herds in Wind Cave National Park. -- BlueCanoe 23:19, 11 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Those are not free ranging herds, they are in parks. The ones on the Henry Mountains are free to roam wherever they please and are not controlled by anyone (actually hunting permits are issued so the population is controlled that way but not their range). I think the claim is made by the BLM but I can't find a reference to it right now, I have no reason to suspect it is not true. Bob Palin 03:30, 12 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Henry Mountains Bison Herd [...] one of only four free-roaming and genetically purebred bison herds on public lands in North America?

The plosone publication cited examines only US populations and makes no mention of Elk Island National Park. There appear to be several brucellosis-free populations in Alberta, Saskatchewan and the NWT, and nearly all bison populations in Canada are free-ranging and on public land. I have updated the text accordingly. Ojalaquellueva (talk) 06:15, 29 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
