This picture is of the Half Way House after it was moved. It used to be near the end of Andrew Harding Lane along the shore just north of the Chatham Light on Pleasant Bay. After the break in the outer barrier beach in 1987 continued erosion threatened the structure. It was eventually moved to South Chatham along Nantucket Sound. For more of the particulars of its move refer to "U.S. Coast Guard Motor Life Boat Station Chatham, MA www.uscg.mil/d1/stachatham/HalfwayHouse.asp" It is on private property and is privately owned. It can easily be seen from the public town landing at the end of Forest Beach Road, South Chatham, MA. In general, Half Way Houses were located half way between Coast Guard Stations and served as temporary shelter from the elements for the Coast Guardsmen who walked the shoreline day and night ready to summon help should a floundering vessel be spotted.
