Legacy

Fortis is a post-secondary network of colleges and institutes that engages students in career learning and training experiences across 40 campuses throughout the United States. Fortis College and Fortis Institute campuses provide education and training for careers in healthcare, nursing, medical, dental, business, information technology, massage, cosmetology and skilled trades. Fortis also offers online learning platforms for an RN to BSN degree program and associate degree programs in Accounting Technology, Business Management, Human Resources Management, Internet Marketing[4], Medical Assisting and Medical Billing and Coding[5].

Fortis History[6] 2008 – The Fortis College campus in Phoenix, AZ became the first school to bear the Fortis name. It was followed that same year by campuses in Salt Lake City, UT, and Norfolk, VA, which had been Virginia Career Institute in Virginia Beach.

2009 – Fortis added four new campus locations in Alabama – in Dothan, Foley, Mobile and Montgomery, which formerly were Capps College campuses. By year’s end, new Fortis campuses also had been opened in Richmond, VA (its second Virginia campus), Pensacola, the first Florida Fortis campus, Indianapolis, IN, and Landover, MD (formerly a Medix School campus). The company’s Florida expansion continued with the addition of new locations in Orange Park and Jacksonville - both formerly North Florida Institute campuses.

2010 – By spring of 2010, Fortis had launched new campuses in Pennsylvania, Ohio and Florida, opening in Forty Fort and Scranton, PA (former AMTI schools), as well as Columbus, Cincinnati and Ravenna, OH (former Bohecker College campuses), along with Cuyahoga Falls and Centerville – previously NIT and RETS locations, respectively. In Florida, Fortis re-branded Central Florida College campuses in Winter Park and Largo, along with the former Gulf Coast College in Tampa and Florida Career Institute in Mulberry. Later in the year, Fortis opened campuses in Miami, FL, a second Montgomery, AL, location, and campuses in Lawrenceville and Wayne, NJ. FORTIS College Online also was launched in 2010 to provide an Internet-based learning platform for students.

2011 – By early summer 2011, Fortis had added campuses in Erie, PA (previously Tri-State Business Institute), Cutler Bay, FL, south of Miami, and re-branded four MedVance schools in Nashville, TN, and three locations in Texas – two in Houston and one in Grand Prairie, just outside Dallas. By the end of the year, Fortis also had new campus locations in Towson and Woodlawn, MD (former Medix Schools), in the Baltimore metropolitan area, as well as Baton Rouge, LA – another former MedVance campus.

2013 – The school’s Florida expansion continued with Fortis converting two more MedVance Institutes in Port St. Lucie and Fort Lauderdale into Fortis schools.

Learning Environment

The mission of Fortis College and Institute campuses is to create learning experiences built upon four core values that are designed to put students first. Called the “Fortis Difference,”[54] the school’s academic approach ascribes to personalized attention, connected career services counselors, caring and supportive campus environments, and an investment in technology. In addition to classroom instruction, students receive experiential, “hands-on” learning experiences.

Fortis also offers an online learning platform for select business and medical programs through FORTIS Online[55]. FORTIS Online provides fully web-based business programs in Accounting[56] Technology, Business Management[57], Human Resource Management[58] and Internet Marketing[59], along with blended learning[60] programs in Medical Assisting[25] and Medical Billing and Coding[26], in which some courses include an on-campus experience. Fortis’ online platform offers day and evening courses and instructor access for students who need flexibility in order to complete their education.

Accreditation

Each Fortis College and Institute campus is accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies[61]: • Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES) • Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges (ACCSC) • Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools (ACICS) • Accrediting Commission of the Council on Occupational Education (COE)

Fortis nursing programs have received approval from their respective state boards of nursing. Select Associate Degree in Nursing (RN) and Registered Nurse to Bachelor of Science in Nursing (RN-BSN) programs also have earned Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN)[62,63] or Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE)[64] accreditations respectively.

Debate

Fortis operates private, for-profit, higher education schools that focus on career-based[65] education experiences. These career colleges typically attract larger populations of non-traditional students[66]. Controversy has been raised over the financial dealings of some for-profit schools[67] and whether graduates are fully prepared to be gainfully employed[68] in the professions for which they studied. Education Affiliates, the parent company of Fortis, recently reached a settlement with the U.S. Department of Justice and agreed to pay a fine[69] for alleged improprieties on the part of a handful of campuses; however, the company admitted no wrongdoing in accepting the decision.

Rejected the article draft as written. We can't accept promotional material including mission statements: the "Fortis Difference" description has a very strong slant, and is not written in a tone appropriate for an encyclopedia. Also, the sourcing needs work: Wikipedia articles cannot cite other Wikipedia articles to avoid circular referencing. The purpose of referencing is to directly support the central claims of the article. On the other hand, most of the references here are to tangentially related topics. This draft needs a lot of work before it can be accepted. Altamel (talk) 01:46, 29 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
