Blasted
The book I have says that the gunners were strongly discouraged to actually TRY to hit the aircraft, as they were expensive ("woe be to the happless gunner that actually succeeded at hitting his target"), I believe it says. Hamiltons (?) Concise Guide to American Aircraft of WWII.
