Reverted several unsourced statements by IP, and added extra information with citations. Read about Krishnadas Shama for an example of the preservation of pre-Portuguese Goan literature by the Portuguese. Marathas never ruled the Velhas Conquistas and had nothing to do with stopping the Inquisition, that process started with the Pombaline reforms. Hinduism in Novas Conquistas was unaffected even after their takeover by the Portuguese due to these internal reforms in the Portuguese government. Anybody can visit temples in the Novas Conquistas (e.g. Mahadev Temple, Tambdi Surla) that were built before the Portuguese ruled it, Hindus there were left alone. The influx of non-Goans into a small state like Goa and various non-Christian demographic changes (e.g. Muslims were less than 1% of Goa residents during Portuguese rule, but over 8% in 2011) due to this mass immigration have also been well-documented.
