race discrimination as a player
I recall published interviews with Bob Hopkins when he was an assistant coach with the Sonics where he described, with some bitterness, the discrimination he faced as a player. Spencer Haywood was a high flying leading scorer with the Sonics at the time, and Bob noted that he could have done many of the same things during his time as a player. However, it was made clear to him that he was to focus on defense and rebounding and not show up the white players, or he would be benched or waived. Unfortunately, I can't find any internet source of these comments.
