I thought proteins that connected epithelial cells to the "basal membrane" were called hemidesmodomes? 128.211.227.159 (talk) 05:54, 4 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Don't know if anyone still cares about the above question but a desmosome is a macula adherentes junction between two epithelial cells. It is made of desmoglein proteins, which are a member of the cadherin family, and binds to intermediate filaments, specifically cytoskeletal keratin. When the epithelial cell is binding to connective tissue the junction is called a hemidesmosome.
