Candidate Listing Order

The candidates on this page are listed in alphabetical order, by last name, in order to maintain a neutral point of view. Party labels are in parenthesis, following the each candidate's name, as they will appear on the ballot.

Proposed Merge

I have proposed that this article be merged with Illinois gubernatorial election, 2006. There is too much overlap in the subject matter of these two articles to warrant seperate articles. The official names of the regularly scheduled elections held in Illinois in 2006, and the ones used by the Illinois State Board of Elections, are the 2006 General Primary Election and the 2006 General Election. I propose that the new article be entitled Illinois Elections (2006) and cover both elections for all statewide offices in Illinois.

Concur with this, for official wording. --JohnDBuell 20:58, 16 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
"__(State name)__ gubernatorial election, 2006" is a standard and recognized naming convention. To merge these articles would seem contrary to that, and may make it harder to find information on these races. - Nhprman List 21:26, 16 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
We're dealing with two seperate issues here--the difference between the 2006 General Election and the 2006 General Primary Election, and the difference between the gubernatioral race versus the races for all statewide offices. I'm starting a new discussion for each issue. Squideshi 21:51, 16 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Proposed Article Name

I disagree with the usage of the __(State name)__ gubernatorial election, 2006 convention because it's inaccurate. There is no such thing as the gubernatorial election in Illinois. The governor is elected using a process that spans two elections--the General Election and the General Primary Election. Also, gubernational candidates run on a combined ticket with the Lt. Governor candidate in Illinois. In addition, while established party candidates participate in the General Primary Election, new party candidates are only permitted to participate in the General Election; so it's more than just one election. EVERY "gubernatorial election" article deals with both primary and general elections, since nearly every gubernatorial election has a primary election and general election. See Texas, Michgan. If the Illinois one is merged into a catch-all article, it will likely be the only state without an article focusing only on its 2006 governor’s race. (See: Category:Gubernatorial elections in the United States) Also, you’ll see in that category list that "2006 Election for statewide offices in the State of Illinois" is the only article so named, making it quite the aberration. - Nhprman List 03:56, 17 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I created it, with the intention of making a single page for ALL elections in Illinois, rather than having pages for EACH of the SIX major statewide offices, which seems to me a bit like overkill. I personally see no problem in having one article for all statewide primaries and a second for the final statewide general election in November. --JohnDBuell 04:08, 17 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Just because other articles have done it this way does not make it the best way. What I am currently proposing is two articles, one named Illinois General Election, 2006 and one named Illinois General Primary Election, 2006. Possible compromises include redirecting Illinois gubernatorial election, 2006 to Illinois General Election, 2006 or making Illinois gubernatorial election, 2006 a disambiguation page with links to both Illinois General Election, 2006 and Illinois General Primary Election, 2006. Another option is to remove information about the gubernational race and link to Illinois gubernatorial election, 2006 from Illinois General Election, 2006. Squideshi 12:37, 17 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
That last might be sensible, as the last couple of months of campaigning look to become quite heated, and it's probably the most visible statewide race at this time. --JohnDBuell 00:14, 18 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Proposed Article Scope

I believe that there should be one article for the event in Illinois called the General Election and another article for the event called the General Primary Election. The articles should cover all races decided in those elections and link to one another. If this were the case, it would be easier to list both active and inactive candidates for each of the races. For example, a primary loser was never a candidate in the General Election; yet a new party candidate, running in the General Election, who is denied ballot access, was never a candidate in the General Primary Election.
