VITEC is a private technology company established in 1988. It is currently based out of its headquarters in Chatillon, France, with other offices across several continents, including North America, Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and Asia Pacific.[1] It designs, develops, and sells IPTV technology to a range of industries, including corporate, broadcast, government, and military.

The company was founded by Philippe Wetzel in Chatillon in 1988, and he currently serves as President. The company expanded and transitioned from providing computer dealers with products to industrial markets in 2001, seeing a return on investment in video innovation.

Many of VITEC’s products and solutions have become industry leaders in terms of build quality and hardware processing, and they have become standouts in the market.

History

The company was founded in Paris, France, in 1988 by now President Wetzel. By 1989, it had introduced its first product, a video capture card for PCs, to the market. In 1992, VITEC developed the first MPEG-1 encoder for microcomputers and continued to lead the development of the newest VVC codecs (H.266).[2]

Between 1993 and 2000, VITEC grew the PC board market and tripled revenues during this 7-year period. Within this timeframe, in 1995, VITEC began exporting outside of France after winning awards throughout the decade, as well as having the very first frame-accurate MPEG editing software.

At the turn of the millennium, VITEC expanded to industrial markets and furthered profits. This included moving away from home user markets of computer dealers to professional markets with system integrators and OEMs.

2010 saw a pair of acquisitions for VITEC, integrating Optibase and Focus/Como, expanding the range of products and solutions for VITEC to offer and distribute. This includes MPEG encoders and decoders, IPTV solutions, smart cameras, and Media Asset Management technology.[3]

In 2015, they then introduced first HEVC hard encoder (Ace) which quickly became a standout in video quality available in the market.

VITEC then launched an initial line of openGear compatible encoder and decoder cards for the Broadcast market in 2019 and acquired T21 as broadcast market penetration the same year.[4] 2020 saw the company commit to going Carbon Neutral with the GreenPEG initiative. This was launched to optimise MPEG technology by addressing and minimising the size, weight, and power of devices that contribute to energy consumption and the resulting emissions.[5]

In 2021, VITEC acquired Exterity to create a global IPTV and digital signage conglomerate with the aim of accelerating growth and strengthening its leadership position. A focus on natural technology and customer synergies between the two companies enables VITEC to extend its reach into new geographies, market verticals, and partners.[6]

At the 73rd annual Technology & Engineering Emmy Awards ceremony, VITEC was presented with a 2022 Technology & Engineering Emmy® Award in the “Management of IP Multicast Video Distribution to Desktops and TVs in News & Media Production Facilities” category for its EZ TV IPTV Platform and its significant impact on users in the television space.[7]
