Down (1997) is a novel by Lawrence Miles[1] featuring the fictional archaeologist Bernice Summerfield. It is part of The New Adventures, a spin-off from the long-running British science fiction television series Doctor Who.
As with some other Bernice Summerfield fiction, the novel is written as if taken from Bernice's diaries and explores the implications of her being an unreliable narrator. The novel includes characters from the People, an alien civilisation introduced in The Also People.

Lawrence Miles fares betters in Down (£4.99), his retelling of sub-terranean sf in the manner of Iain Banks. The plot of this story is so labyrinthine and ludicrous it is fun, and the outrageous plot twists ensure we know the writer had his tongue planted firmly in his cheek as he wrote.
