What goes in this category?

What's the cut-off that defines if someone should be listed in Category:Cross-dressers versus Category:Transgender and transsexual people? WP:BLPCAT says that someone should self-identify as the label for them to go in the category, though it also suggests (per the "criminals" example) that if there's ample evidence, as well as widespread agreement by others, that others can apply a label to them. So, being placed in this category means that they would self identify (or others very clearly identify them) as crossdressers, but they don't self identify (or are clearly identified) as transgender?

The word transgender is relatively recent (various sources give the origin as 1969 or 1979), so much older biographies may be more straightforward (eg. Lasse-Maja, Boulton and Park) — the label transgender didn't exist back then for people to use.

On the other hand, transvestite is not much older (1910?), but it seems to be used as a catch-all for much older biographies to mean "it's not clear how they would have self-identified if they had modern labels available". (which, IMHO, isn't too different from "transgender spectrum", since transgender is an umbrella term) --Hirsutism (talk) 01:06, 15 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
