Éxodo (transl.Exodus) is the upcoming fourth studio album by Mexican singer Peso Pluma, which is set to release in 20 June 2024, through the singer's own label, Double P Records. The singer enlisted guest appearances from Junior H, Eslabon Armado, Jasiel Nuñez, Neton Vega, Tito Double P, Joel de la P, Luis R. Conriquez, Óscar Maydon, Chino Pacas, Estevan Plazola, Iván Cornejo, Natanael Cano, Gabito Ballesteros, Rich the Kid, Cardi B, Quavo, Arcángel, Anitta, Ryan Castro, Kenia Os and DJ Snake.

Succeeding his third studio album Génesis (2023), which debuted at number three on the Billboard 200, the album was revealed during a cover story with Rolling Stone, becoming the first Mexican artist to do so, where he stated that Génesis showed his "superhero side" and that Éxodo would show his "dark side" and would be released as a response to critics. The album was further promoted through the announcement of its accompanying tour, as well as seven singles including "Bellakeo", "Rompe la Dompe", "La People II", "Peso Completo", "Teka", "La Durango" and "Gimme a Second".

A double album with a total of 24 tracks, its first disc contains 16 regional Mexican songs and corridos tumbados, while its second disc contains eight Latin trap or reggaeton songs.

Background and recording

During an cover story with Rolling Stone, where he also became the first regional Mexican artist to be on the cover of their magazine, he talked about winning his first Grammy for his successful album Génesis and revealed his next album title while regarding the rumors about his breakup with Nicki Nicole, to which he did not want to talk about.[1][2] At the 2024 iHeartRadio Music Awards, Peso Pluma won the awards for Regional Mexican Song (for "Ella Baila Sola" with Eslabon Armado) and Regional Mexican Artist of the Year and would also confirm that Éxodo would be released in May 2024.[3] It was later confirmed that Pluma signed with Creative Artists Agency, where he is set to distribute the album from.[4] In the aforementioned interview, recording is suspected to have taken place at Lab Studios in Coconut Grove, Miami, Florida, with American producer Edgar Barrera and fellow songwriter Alexis Fierro, known as El Chachito who wrote the singer's hit single "Lady Gaga", appearing in the process.[1]

Music and lyrics

Éxodo is a 24-track double album, with 16 songs in its first disc containing mostly regional Mexican music and corridos tumbados; its guest appearances include Junior H, Eslabon Armado, Jasiel Nuñez, Neton Vega, Tito Double P, Joel de la P, Luis R. Conriquez, Óscar Maydon, Chino Pacas, Estevan Plazola, Iván Cornejo, Natanael Cano and Gabito Ballesteros. Its second disc contains Latin trap and reggaeton music, and guest appearances from Rich the Kid, Cardi B, Quavo, Arcángel, Anitta, Ryan Castro, Kenia Os and DJ Snake.[5] The singer explained to Rolling Stone that his third album Génesis showed his "superhero side", but Éxodo shows "his dark side" and that it is a direct response to critics who "focus more on the negatives than the positives", likely referring to his music.[6][7]

There are several references and themes made from the track titles, as well as in any song's lyrics. Its opening track, "La Durango" with Junior H and Eslabon Armado, is a corrido tumbado that lyrically talks about how "beautiful" women are in a Dodge Durango, which alludes to the title;[8] he also makes a reference to the tequila Don Julio 70.[9] The fourth track, "La People II" with Tito Double P and Joel de la P, is a sequel to the former's track with the first mentioned singer "La People" and contains lyrical elements to that of a narcocorrido, which is an apology for organized crime and contains references to El Nini, El 27, and El Piyi, who all have connections to the Sinaloa Cartel.[10][11]

"Rompe la Dompe", the album's sixth track with Junior H and Óscar Maydon, is a corrido tumbado[12] where its lyrics revolve around having a party, forgetting about a lover, and opening a bottle of Champagne, specifically the Dom Pérignon brand.[13][14] "Belanova" with Tito Double P makes a reference to the Mexican pop band of the same name and a possible "follow-up" to the former's song "Rosa Pastel", "Santal 33" with Óscar Maydon to the cologne, and "Tommy & Pamela" with Kenia Os to American musician Tommy Lee and Canadian-American actress Pamela Anderson.[15]

Release and promotion

The album's title was first revealed as Éxodo in a March 2024 cover story with Rolling Stone.[1] The singer would officially reveal the release date for Éxodo, set for digital download and streaming on 20 June 2024, though a teaser featuring Irish professional mixed martial artist Conor McGregor.[16] The tracklist and cover art for Éxodo were revealed on 24 May 2024, and was also available for pre-save on Spotify that same day.[17][15]

Singles

Before any announcement regarding the album was made, Peso Pluma would release "Bellakeo" with Brazilian singer Anitta on 7 December 2023, as its lead single.[18] Its music video was filmed in Madrid and it peaked at number 53 on the Billboard Hot 100.[19][20] Three weeks later, he would release "Rompe la Dompe" with fellow singers Junior H and Óscar Maydon, as the album's second single[21] It peaked at number 80 on the Billboard Hot 100.[20]

Prior to the tour announcement, he would post a random date on X (formerly Twitter), 21 March 2024, along with the text "solo mi deber ejecute..."; it was speculated that his next album would be released on the exact date.[22] "La People II" with fellow singers Tito Double P and Joel de la P would instead be released on the date as the album's third single.[23] It is a sequel to the first two artists' collaborative song "La People" from the album Génesis, and it peaked at numbers 69 and two on US Billboard Hot 100 and US Hot Latin Songs charts, respectively.[24][25] "Peso Completo" with American rapper Arcángel would be released on 11 April 2024, as the fourth single from Éxodo, after it was announced that Pluma would release a Latin trap song.[26] Both singers performed the song at the 2024 Latin American Music Awards and it peaked at number 42 on US Hot Latin Songs.[27][28]

Other singles released following the announcement of Éxodo include "Teka" with DJ Snake, which was released on 17 April 2024 as its fifth single and peaked at number 36 on US Hot Latin Songs.[29][28] Another single would be speculated after Eslabon Armado and Junior H shared an image on Instagram Stories, along with Pluma.[30] It led to the release of "La Durango" on 9 May 2024 as the sixth single from the album.[31] The single was also announced along with the album and its music video features McGregor.[32] Peso Pluma performed it with Tovar of Eslabon Armado on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon; Pluma was also the show's special guest where they discussed the album and its tour.[33] Through other teasers, it was also confirmed that Pluma would collaborate with Rich the Kid, where they both later released "Gimme a Second" on 25 May 2024 as the co-lead single from the latter's album Life's a Gamble and was also set to be included on Éxodo.[34]

Tour

Peso Pluma would announce his second headlining tour, the Éxodo Tour, in February 2024, which was set as the album's supporting tour; it was also set to have an "all-new show, inclusive of a fully reimagined set design and setlist."[35] Produced by Live Nation, the tour was set to begin on 26 May 2024, at the Sueños Music Festival in Chicago, Illinois, which ended up getting cancelled before the singer's performance started due to severe weather.[36][37] The tour is currently set to conclude on 18 October 2024 at the Amerant Bank Arena in Sunrise, Florida, through an update on tour dates.[38]
