After whichHeath House, save for the family portraits and other picturesmildewing on its walls, remained empty until 1901, when itwas taken by a Bristol furniture dealer named Hayman, whoresided there until 1908. At Sir Greville Smyths death, in 1901, the Heath Houseestate, following the entail, passed to his only survivingsister, Florence Anne, widow of Clement Upton Cottrell-Dormer, Esq., who immediately made it over to her eldest son,Captain Charles W. Cottrell-Dormer, of Rousham Hall, Ox-fordshire, who, rinding the house quite useless as a residenceand a source of expense rather than of income, put it, together 68 Transactions for the Year 1912. with Stapleton Park and the outlying portions of the entailedestate up to auction on 24th July, 1911. Though many of thefarms thus offered found ready purchasers, not a bid wasrecorded for Heath House, which still remains, though muchagainst his will, in the possession of a descendant of its ancientowners.

The bi-centenary of the publication of the first History ofGloucestershire seems an appropriate time for some recordin our Transactions of the author of The Ancient and PresentState of Glostershire, which was published in 1712, a few monthsafter his death. During the past two hundred years everyonein search of matter relating to the history of the County ofGloucester has been indebted to the industry and researchof Sir Robert Atkyns, while later writers have acknowledgedhis work as one of the principal sources of their own labours.The members of our Society, and contributors to theTransactions, should have special interest in one who helpedso much in laying the foundation of the historical record of thecounty, and a further reason for bringing together theparticulars now presented is the fact that the existingbiographical notices of Sir Rob
