Das Rote Schloss wurde 1574-76 als Witwensitz für die Herzogin Dorothea Susanna errichtet. Unterirdische Gänge verbanden es mit dem Stadtschloss und dem Grünen Schloss. Hier war im 18. Jh. die von Johann Wolfgang Goethe und Friedrich Justin Bertuch gegründete Freie Zeichenschule untergebracht; später diente es als Ministerialgebäude. Heute ist darin die Erweiterung der Anna-Amalia-Bibliothek.
