Español: En el año 1874, el fotógrafo J. Laurent (Juan Laurent, o Jean Laurent), reprodujo las 14 obras murales conocidas como las Pinturas negras (de Goya), que estaban todavía en los muros de la antigua casa de la Quinta de Goya (o Quinta del Sordo), en Madrid.
"Perro semihundido" o, más simplemente, "El perro", es como se conoce esta pintura, que estaba situada en el primer piso de la casa. Fue fotografiada por Laurent poco antes de que el restaurador Salvador Martínez Cubells procediese a su arranque del muro y traslado a lienzo. Esta fotografía es muy importante ya que permite conocer el estado de la pintura original en el año 1874 (50 años después de que Goya abandonase su casa, con destino al exilio francés). La pintura, en 1874, presentaba diversos deterioros, tales como grietas atravesando la propia obra, el marco de papel, y también el muro recubierto con papel pintado. Estas grietas demuestran que la pintura de Goya todavía estaba situada en la casa de la Quinta de Goya. Otros deterioros son faltas, arrastres de color y repintes (que pueden dar lugar a erróneas interpretaciones). El rótulo, indicando "Museo del Prado" fue añadido después de la muerte del fotógrafo Laurent, por sus sucesores (Melina Dosch, y Alfonso Roswag), hacia el año 1890; cuando esta pintura ya había sido donada al Museo del Prado por el banquero Erlanger. El negativo de vidrio original se conserva en muy buen estado. En el año 2011 este negativo de vidrio al colodión (del formato 27 x 36 centímetros, conservado en Madrid, en el Archivo Ruiz Vernacci, de la Fototeca del Instituto del Patrimonio Cultural de España) fue digitalizado por el técnico Pedro Aparicio, respetando la imagen completa, sin efectuar retoques. Esta pintura estaba enmarcada con un marco de papel, y rodeada también con papel pintado, en la antigua casa de Goya, en 1874. Estos papeles pintados pudieron fabricarse a mediados del siglo XIX, años después de la muerte de Goya (en 1828). Por otra parte, al ser una pintura mural y no poder fotografiarse al exterior de la casa, a pleno sol (como era habitual), seguramente Laurent debió emplear iluminación eléctrica, pues ya disponía de un equipo portátil de luz eléctrica, para iluminar en condiciones difíciles. Por eso, todas las fotografías de Laurent de la serie de las Pinturas Negras presentan un extraño resplandor, ajeno a la iluminación natural.English: "The Dog", in 1874, at the Quinta de Goya.
