This is an excellent example for the concurrent use of two different scripts in German language (Zweischriftigkeit): German text is set in Fraktur (with initials). Latin words ("LEGATUS NATUS", "Consensus") and French words ("Militaire", "Officiers") are set in Antiqua. Note the typesetting of "Militz": as a German word with French origin it's set in Antiqua. However, for German words it was common to set "tz" as a ligature. Apparently the Antiqua-font used in this text didn't include a tz-ligature, so it was set with a letter from a different font

Dieses Bild ist ein gutes Beispiel für die deutsche Zweischriftigkeit im Fraktursatz: Deutschsprachiger Text wird in Fraktur gesetzt (mit aufwändigen initialen). Lateinische Wörter ("LEGATUS NATUS", "Consensus") und französische Wörter ("Militaire", "Officiers") sind in Antiqua gesetzt. Bemerkenswert ist der Satz von "Militz": als französisches Lehnwort wird es in Antiqua gesetzt. Aber als eingedeutschtes Wort enthält es ein "tz", das nach den klassischen deutschen Satzregeln eine Zwangsligatur erfordert. Offensichtlich fehlte die tz-Ligatur in der verwendeten Antiqua-Schrift, also hat sie der Setzer durch eine Letter aus einer anderen (vermutlich gebrochenen) Schrift ersetzt. |
