DescriptionHead of Artemis (2nd cent. B.C.) at the National Archaeological Museum of Athens on October 6, 2021.jpg
English: Colossal head of Artemis. Sanctuary of Despoina at Lykosoura, Arcadia. Early 2nd cent. B.C.
The cult statue of Artemis, part of the group in the Temple of the Great Goddesses, Demeter and Despoina, at Lykosoura, was the work of the sculptor Damophon. Artemis was linked to the naval battle of Salamis due to the moonlight that allegedly helped in the favourable outcome of the battle. Before the battles, sacrifices were offered to Artemis Agrotera, as the goddess was thought to have a military nature. Inv. no. Γ 1735. National Archaeological Museum of Athens.
