English: Hare Hall, Upper Brentwood Road A handsome gentleman's villa, designed by James Paine in 1768-69 for John Wallinger, a cork and stone merchant of Colchester. The Tuscan porch was added in 1896 by Howard Seth-Smith. The attached portico with Adamesque capitals and coupled pilasters at the angles of the facade are characteristic of Paine. Grade II* listed.
The building has been a school since 1921 and is now part of the Royal Liberty School.
Paine built up a successful practice in the 1750s-1770s, causing one commentator to remark that Paine and Robert Taylor, "nearly divided the practice of the profession between them, for they had few competitors till Mr Robert Adam entered the lists". Paine's star did wane somewhat as Adam's shone more brightly.
