The inscription reads "OUR SWEETEST SONGS ARE THOSE WHICH TELL OF SADDEST THOUGHTS". Alfred Buxton, a local sculptor, exhibited at the Royal Academy Between 1910 and 1929, including a relief "Chanson Triste" (1927) which is probably this work.
