Summary
DescriptionCarbonic anhydrase II mechanism.svg
English: Schematic of the carbonic anhydrase II mechanism. Carbon dioxide binds near the active site zinc-bound hydroxide ion leading to a nucleophilic attack creating a bicarbonate ion. Following displacement of the bicarbonate by water, a proton transfer mediated by the enzyme restores the catalytically active zinc-bound hydroxide ion.
