DescriptionCMOC Treasures of Ancient China exhibit - large grey mug.jpg
English: Large Gray Mug
Henan Longshan Culture
Late Neolithic Period (ca. 2500 - 2000 B.C.)
Excavated at Zhengzhou, Henan Province, 1955
Made on a pottery wheel along the middle to lower reaches of the Yellow River.
The shape of this cup's mouth indicates it may have once had a cover, and the proportional melon rind decoration suggests the potters of this culture understood the concept of dividing objects into equal parts.
